An inside look at the legal profession: Isa's internship at PvdB

With a broad interest in law and a curiosity about the legal profession, law student Isa Horstik wanted to discover what the work is like in practice. After some conversations with fellow students and a thorough look at the website, PvdB felt like a place where she could feel at home. So in December and January she did an internship with the Real Estate & Project Development and Rent teams, under the supervision of Eline van der Zwaag. During this period she discovered how varied legal issues can be in practice. Meanwhile, Isa has taken the next step within the firm and has been working for two months now as a legal assistant in the Real Estate & Project Development section, where she continues to develop within this field. In the article below you can read how Isa experienced her internship.

Positive impression

Because of PvdB's reputation among Nijmegen students, Isa always had a positive impression of the firm. What particularly appealed to her was the image of a down-to-earth and informal approach, combined with a clear passion for the profession. This feeling was immediately confirmed during her job interview. During her internship Isa noticed that cooperation and collegiality were key and she was involved in the team from day one. This made the threshold for asking questions low and gave her the opportunity to learn a lot.

"I got the impression that I could really be myself here."

Varied work and new insights

During the internship, Isa was able to significantly improve her legal skills. She worked on a variety of cases, including an injunction case, a non-performance of a purchase agreement and an ABC transaction. She found the variety of issues very wardeful. In addition, Isa also got to attend a hearing. "Attending a hearing gave me a good idea of how important it is to get the right information during conversations with clients," she says.
What surprised her most was how relative the choice of a specific area of law turns out to be in the end. This insight reassured her, "I notice that my interests are broad, but now I know that I don't necessarily have to pin myself down to one area of law."

Future plans

The internship at Poelmann van den Broek has increased Isa's enthusiasm for the legal profession: "I can definitely see myself working in the legal profession. The varied and challenging nature of the work really appeals to me." With this internship, she also wanted to explore what type of firm best suits her. And despite this being her first internship in the legal profession, she can well imagine that a firm like Poelmann is where she would eventually want to work. During her internship, Isa found, among other things, insolvency law more interesting than she expected. She therefore hopes to work with this in practice in the future.

After completing her internship, Isa started her master in Corporate Law. She has also found another new challenge within the firm: since February, she has been working as a legal assistant at Poelmann van den Broek. With her new position she is taking a nice next step in her legal career!
